Why Acidosis is So Bad in Kidney Disease

Our  kidneys are indeed remarkable. They are built to eliminate the toxins and the acid levels that build up on a daily basis. They work in concert with our other organ systems to maintain balance and homeostasis. Acidosis,  characterized by an acidic or very low pH is one situation where the body is gravely out of balance. Because our body is interconnected, multiple body systems are affected.

Our bones and muscles become week. The acidosis causes the breakdown of muscle. It increases mucle protein degradation. Instead of being able to utilize protein and nutrients, out bodies become catabolic, breaking down little by little. In our cells there is increased oxidative stress. There is increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, or markers of inflammation.

Alakline supplementation is vital to reversing the acidosis, stopping the protein breakdown, stopping the inflammation and changing our body chemistry from a catabolic state to an anabolic state. Rather than breaking our body down, we are building it up again.

I believe alkaline supplementation is vital to maintaining our kidney health and overall health. I am currently in the processs of putting the finishing touches on my forthcoming book on dialysis. In my research I read a line from one study that struck a chord with me. If I can paraphrase, the author said, they they can understand the need for alkali therapy in the treatment of metabolic acidosis,and  they "urged" the pharmaceuticals to  "develop a palatable alkali-containing solution."
