Topics on Improve Your Kidney Health Radio Show: New Cohost

This week I am welcoming a co-host to Improve Your Kidney Health. His name is Marc Blatstein. He is a dynamic individual and a force to be reckoned with.  Marc has Chronic Kidney Disease. He has a history of long-standing Diabetes, but he has found a way to Win With Diabetes. This is his motto, and with this motto he has transformed a lot of lives.  He is a Diabetes Health Coach, a second degree black belt in Taw-Kwan-Do, and he embraces an integrative approach to kidney disease and kidney health. He has either chaired on has been on many organizations concerning diabetes; this includes being the Past President of Philadelphia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. He is also a veteran radio and televsion talk show personality. We welcome him to the show.

This week we have with us David Harder, Herbalist a,s out special  guest. In the first part of the show, we will talk more about what you can do with Early Stage Chronic Kidney Disease. Guest on Healthy by Nature with Martie Whittekin Concerning PPIs and Kidney Health

This past September I was a guest on the Healthy by Nature Show with Martie Whittekin talking about Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) and ther effects on our total bodry health. The prior post on PPIs and acidity got me thinking about this show from lat Septermber of this year. Here is the link to that show for anyone if interested: 092411.mp3

There Is One Part of Your Body That Should Remain Acidic: Your Stomach

This post is not just geared to anyone with kidney disease, but to anyone who is concerned about their overall health and well being. What I am talking about concerns the overuse of proton pump inhibitors. Don't get me wrong. They do have a place for short term use if you have  a really bad ulcer or significant gastric inflammation. It is the long term overuse that I believe to be a problem.

Your stomach needs to be acidic to digest the food that you eat. God made us this way. Without an acidic pH in the stomach (ie the gastric area), food does not get digested, nutrients do not get absorbed. Vitamin D absorption, B12 absorption, and other nutrients are affected.

Here are a couple of links to articles where the long term use of these medications may increase the risk of osteoporosis (this point is controversial in some studies), B12 deficiency, as well as the increase of one of the most dreaded hospital infections, Clostridium difficile colitis.

Here are a couple of links talking about the dangers of overuse of these medications:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21909830
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20582909

What does this teach us? The key is to keep ourselved in balance. When the body is out of balance, bad things can happen. Overuse of PPIs puts the body totally out of balance.

Probiotics and Alkaline Water are For Everyone

Over at Gail Rae's website on her blog I did a guest blog last week concerning how to utilize probiotics and alkalinizing water in kidney disease. The title says it all: Probiotics and Alkaline Water are indeed for everyone. Here is the link to her site: http://gailrae.wordpress.com/

Why Acidosis is So Bad in Kidney Disease

Our  kidneys are indeed remarkable. They are built to eliminate the toxins and the acid levels that build up on a daily basis. They work in concert with our other organ systems to maintain balance and homeostasis. Acidosis,  characterized by an acidic or very low pH is one situation where the body is gravely out of balance. Because our body is interconnected, multiple body systems are affected.

Our bones and muscles become week. The acidosis causes the breakdown of muscle. It increases mucle protein degradation. Instead of being able to utilize protein and nutrients, out bodies become catabolic, breaking down little by little. In our cells there is increased oxidative stress. There is increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, or markers of inflammation.

Alakline supplementation is vital to reversing the acidosis, stopping the protein breakdown, stopping the inflammation and changing our body chemistry from a catabolic state to an anabolic state. Rather than breaking our body down, we are building it up again.

I believe alkaline supplementation is vital to maintaining our kidney health and overall health. I am currently in the processs of putting the finishing touches on my forthcoming book on dialysis. In my research I read a line from one study that struck a chord with me. If I can paraphrase, the author said, they they can understand the need for alkali therapy in the treatment of metabolic acidosis, and  they "urged" the pharmaceuticals to  "develop a palatable alkali-containing solution."

One already exists. We have a water system that is more than palatable. It tastes great. More than that,  we have a water that energizes, alkalinizes, mineralizes, and provides anti-oxidant support. It helps t decrease total body inflammarion and restore homeostasis.

We have Santevia.
