Probiotics and Kidney Disease

One of the most overlooked aspects of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) are those triggers of inflammation in the body. One very important area is the intestine. One connection that has been established is the link between gluten and IgA Nephropathy. There are links between milk protein and causes of proteinuria in children. This, however, is just the beginning. As doctors, we need to ask about triggers of inflammation. As patients, you need to be aware of them.

In anyone coming into my office, we will spend some time talking about bowel health. Gluten sensitivity, food sensitivities are linked to kidney disease. In anyone with moderate to advanced Chronic Kidney Disease, I have used a kidney based probiotic, Kibow. I have used this probiotic as part of a "kidney arsenal" and I have seen people get their lives back. It eliminates the uremic toxins as well as decreasing intestinal inflammation.

The use of a probiotic, fiber ( to bind intestinal toxins and mycotoxins) as well as healing a "leaky gut" is one important aspect of improving kidney health. The intestinal kidney connection cannot be emphasized enough.
